I read "Howard's Gift" by Eric C. Sinoway. It took me from the end of July until the middle of November to read all 278 pages. Here's what I learned or had thoughts on, told by 15 sticky notes that I left for myself so I wouldn't forget, in no particular order:
.) "Over the last year, have you gotten 12 months worth of experience, or 1 month of experience 12 times" - Howard Stevenson
.) In response, Fire quote! Also, having a mentor figure would be nice to have
.) Mentorship allows for growth of both parites. The mentee gains experience and confidence. The mentor gains new knowledge, ideas, and fulfilment.
.) A role model is a mosaic to create a future version of yourself. This is not a mirror, as all of the pieces won't fit quite right. That's okay.
.) Balancing requires understanding of what is important, and then sticking it out for that importance. Each aspect needs energy, what needs the most, and what matters the most?
.) By the time you become who you want, both you and the world around you will have changed. There is no final form, only growth.
.) Every decision has an upfront investment, and an implicit opportunity cost. Arrange goals sequentially, and find what has the least investment or energy spent for the most gain. You can have anything you want, just not all at once.
.) Your inside always looks worse than someone's outside. Address your competencies and build on those, it's more impactful than being okay at most things.
.) Find talent, joy, and an advantage above everyone. Without all, you will fail. Some jobs aren't meant to be, and that's okay!
.) Focus on maintaining connections with those most important or helpful to you
.) Discomfort during an interaction means the interaction does not have something for you, or is not what you desire.
.) It's important to find contentment to have a place that challenges you, but also that you're competent in.
.) Environment / Culture superseeds any form of skill or talent. The right culture manifests those things on their own.
.) Make sure culture for work and yourself works for you!
.) "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." - Arthur Ashe
I hope these feel somewhat impactful, I'll have more to come at some point.
